Educational Philosophy of TIU

Since the establishment of TIU in 1965, we have consistently aimed at “cultivating true citizens of the world,” who have courage to act for the vision of the future as well as the intelligence to support the same.

Our education system is based on the following three concepts: “Foreign language education” for cultivating substantial communication capabilities in international society, “information education”to survive in the IT era, and “small-group education” to enhance learning capabilities.

flow

Foreign language education

A substantial overseas study system, based on a network comprising 12 universities worldwide.

Language education covering 8 languages to expand your world.

Various forms of language study support.

Information education

Substantial PC environment.

Classes capitalizing on information devices.

Small-group education

All the students should participate in a seminar from the freshman year onwards, studying in small groups under a responsible teacher. This is where they learn the basics of learning, namely, a scientific mindset, the means to express themselves, and how to find their own theme of study and implement research in their area of specialization under the man-to-man instructions of the teachers, who, with their distinctive personalities, navigate you in active study.

The seminars in the freshman year are focused on providing students with educational guidance, including manners and learning basics, so the students can determine their future direction. In their sophomore year, the students begin carrying out their own research in their chosen field of specialization, and in the junior and senior years, they further pursue this research, focusing on summarizing the results in their graduation thesis.

Message from the President to Applying Student
“Exploit your potential by pursuing ‘practical study,’ which is the foundation of your future. Learning will open global gateways for you.”

President During the 42-year period since the establishment of Tokyo International University in 1965, both domestic and overseas circumstances have changed drastically. Japan is now playing an important role as one of the advanced global nations, and a number of Japanese people are recognized internationally for their distinguished work. Such global circumstances, which are closely related to our daily lives, affect us both materially and immaterially. Tokyo International University has operated under such contemporary trends in accordance with its consistent educational philosophy; namely “to cultivate people with an international outlook and the spirit to pursue practical study.”“Pursuing practical study,” however, does not simply mean acquiring professional skills. Tokyo International University currently has ten departments in five schools, ranging from the traditional School of Business and Commerce to the School of Language Communication, which was established in 2004. We would like you to establish yourself as a member of the global community. As an active member, you will have the opportunity to challenge your intellect in each of our departments. During your four years of learning, you will have the unique experience of applying your classroom learning to real encounters, which is what we call “pursuing practical study.” In our ever changing world, it is critical to keep pace with contemporary trends. It is implemented various reforms to keep pace with contemporary trends, based on the “spirit of pursuing practical study”, enabling you to achieve your specific future goals. We are proud of our various educational reform programs, which allow you to tackle practical learning creatively, both on and off of the campus. We also offer various subjects that help you consider the ideal nature for Japan and the world, as well as language education programs covering eight languages and various popular overseas study programs. Our first aim is to deepen your understanding of Japanese and overseas cultures, and establish yourself as a Japanese in order to cope with people worldwide with coexistence in mind. When you achieve this goal, you will become a true world citizen. Learning in each of our departments will lead you into international society. Every one of you has great potential. Do not be afraid of making mistakes. Challenge anything with a young spirit to determine your goal. We will do our best to support your commitment to explore your future through learning. Your path will lead you to the world.

Takayoshi Arai

President of Tokyo International University
