Established as the University of International Business and Commerce by Taizo Kaneko

Inaugurated as a 4-year single-department college (Department of Business and Commerce, School of Business and Commerce) Pledges relationship with Willamette University (U.S.A.) Commences WU summertime overseas seminar

Opens Campus 2, to where the School of International Studies and Human Relations is transferred

Establishes a master's program in the Graduate School of International Relations

Celebrates its 20th anniversary

Changes name to Tokyo International University

Establishes a master's program in the Graduate School of Business and Commerce and in the Graduate School of Sociology

Reaches an exchange agreement with Shanxi University (China)

1987

Opens a Japanese-language school attached to TIU

Taizo Kaneko, founder of TIU, passed away

Vice President Yasuo Kaneko takes over as President

Establishes a doctoral program in the Graduate School of Business and Commerce (doctoral course)

Establishes the School of Economics and the Department of Management and Information Science in the School of Business and Commerce

Opens the Tokyo International University of America (TIUA) in Salem, Oregon

Commences the TIUA study program

Celebrates the 25th anniversary of international exchange

Introduces a multimedia network system

Reaches an exchange agreement with Kyung Hee University (South Korea) and the University of Konstanz (Germany)

Commences an Australia overseas seminar (current Griffith University seminar)

Reaches an exchange agreement with Vaxjo University (Sweden)

Establishes a master's program in the Graduate School of Economics

Reorganizes the School of International Studies and Human Relations into the School of International Relations and the School of Human and Social Sciences

Celebrates its 30th anniversary

Reaches an exchange agreement with Chinese Culture University (Taiwan)

Celebrates the 10th anniversary of TIUA

Professor Kiyoshi Okamoto becomes president

2001 Opens the Waseda Satellite

Establishes master's and doctoral programs in the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology (first and second semesters)

Professor Takayoshi Arai becomes President

Reorganizes Departments in the School of Business and Commerce into the following three

Changes the name from the Department of International Broadcasting and Journalism in the School of International Relations to the Department of Media and Communication Studies
