Transferring Credit |
Many students transfer credit earned at Tokyo International University back to their home institution. Please make sure you contact the appropriate officials at your home institution about the requirments for transferring credit before you arrive in Japan. Please contact the JSP office if you or your university requires any additional information in order to transfer credit.
Required Course Load |
Students are required to take one Japanese language course and two Japan Studies Courses. If a student has a valid reason why he or she should take more or less courses, the student may petition the JSP academic coordinator for permission. An example of a valid reason is a student's home institution requires the student to take a higher course load.
Courses |
Japanese language classes consist of eight 90-minute classes per week. Japan Studies Courses consist of two 90-minute classes per week. Each Japan Studies Course will also have one field trip.
Registration |
All students must preregister for Japan Studies Courses. Final registration must be completed by the end of the second class. Students are free to visit all available courses and change their selection during the first two weeks of class.
Audit |
Students may not audit any courses.
Independent Fieldwork Studies |
The purpose of Independent Fieldwork Studies (IFS) is to allow students the opportunity to pursue topics of individual interest using resources that are unique to Japan. This allows a student to research a topic not covered by the Japan Studies Program's official courses.
Details must be arranged at the student's home institution and at Tokyo International University BEFORE the student comes to Japan. IFS cannot be arranged after arrival.
Cancellation of Japan Studies Courses |
We reserve the right to cancel any Japan Studies Courses if there are not sufficient students signed up after preregistration. Any students who have signed up will be contacted and given the opportunity to enroll for another course or in special cases the student may be able to apply to for an Independent Study in that same subject.
Grading System |
Students are given grades in percentage form only. We request that the home institution converts the percentage to a letter grade according to their own system.
Transcripts |
We send three copies of the transcripts to the student's home address after the completion of each semester. If requested, transcripts can also be sent directly to the student's home institution. Further copies of the transcript may be requested at any time, however, there will be a 1000 yen processing fee.
