Independent Fieldwork Studies
Objectives:
The purpose of Independent Fieldwork Studies (IFS) is to allow students the opportunity to pursue topics of individual interest using resources that are unique to Japan. This allows a student to research a topic not covered by the Japan Studies Program's (JSP) other offerings.
To be arranged at a student's home institution BEFORE coming to Japan:
| 1.A professor at the home institution must be found with whom one can set up an IFS project BEFORE coming to Japan. With this professor: |
|
| (1) |
Set up a clear course of study that can be reasonably completed within one JSP semester.
|
| (2) |
Decide how the IFS course will be evaluated.
|
| (3) |
Decide the amount of credit to be granted for the course
|
| 2.If IFS is to be taken for two consecutive JSP semesters, a student and faculty advisor at the home institution must decide together: |
|
| (1) |
About whether the same course of study will be covered over two JSP semesters, or whether two different courses of study will be pursued. In either case, well-defined study goals must be set up that can be reasonably completed within each JSP semester. |
| (2) |
How the IFS course will be evaluated. |
| (3) |
The amount of credit to be granted for IFS during each JSP semester. |
| 3.During the JSP class registration period BEFORE arriving in Japan: |
|
| (1) |
Have one's home university professor who is responsible for the IFS study send TIU's JSP Office a letter (printed on paper, email unacceptable) outlining clearly:
|
| a. |
What the study goals are that can be reasonably completed within a JSP semester. |
| b. |
How the student will be evaluated. |
| c. |
The amount of credit to be granted for successful completion of the course. |
| d. |
The professor's contact information. |
| (1) |
The JSP Academic Coordinator will advise students as best as possible, pointing them toward libraries, museums, or other resources in Japan that may best help them accomplish their IFS study goals. |
| 5.IFS notation on a student's JSP final course transcript: |
|
|
JSP issues no credit or grades for IFS as these are to be handled by a student's home institution. On a student's final JSP transcript it will be noted whether a student has taken IFS. In place of credit or a grade, a notation will state that these matters have been settled directly by a student's home institution.
