JSP - Japan Studies Program
Tokyo International University
Immigration Procedure
To study at Tokyo International University you will need to apply for a "college student" visa. This process will take over two months including receiving your Certificate of Eligibility from Japan and then the "Exchange Student" visa in your home country.

CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY
To apply for your "college student" visa students must first receive a Certificate of Eligibility, which is issued by the Japanese Ministry of Justice. The Certificate of Eligibility is a certificate that states you are eligible to study in Japan. TIU applies for the Certificate of Eligibility on your behalf.

We will submit the applications for the Certificates of Eligibility after receiving your documents. It will take up to two months for the Ministry of Justice to issue the Certificate. After receiving your certificate, we will send it to the address indicated on your vacation address form.

You must apply for the actual "Exchange Student" visa yourself at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate Office nearest to your home or university. We strongly recommend that you contact the Japanese Embassy or consulate office while you are waiting to receive the Certificate of Eligibility. You will need to find out directly from that consulate office their precise requirements for you to obtain your "college student" visa.

VISA APPLICATION
Once you receive the Certificate of Eligibility, you can apply for a visa in person at the Japanese Consulate you have been in contact with.

In most cases, you will be instructed to fill out visa application forms and attach two passport-sized photographs. Please call ahead to confirm exactly what you will need to receive your visa.

You may be able to apply for the "College Student" visa by mail. You need to contact to the consulate to determine if this is possible and to request visa application forms to be sent to you.

You must present your visa to the Immigration Officials at the airport when you enter Japan.

Please note: If a student enters Japan before they have received their "college student" visa, or enters Japan with a visa other than a "college student" visa, they may be requested to leave Japan to change their visa status. The student must apply and pay for any applications to change visa status themselves.
