JSP - Japan Studies Program
Tokyo International University

The Japan Studies Program offers an optional four to five day excursion to Kyoto/Hiroshima every semester. This excursion is designed to expose students to several important historical, and beautiful, areas of Japan. Always a highlight of each semester, students find this to be an experience they never forget.
The Optional Excursion is not covered in program costs and there is an additional fee of 100,000 yen for the trip.

1st stop - Miyajima
The optional excursion begins by riding the bullet train, "shinkansen", to Hiroshima. From Hiroshima, we take a local train and ferry to Miyajima, said to be one of the three most beautiful places in Japan. The most famous sight is a Shinto gate, "Torii", that is located in the ocean. During the day, students are encouraged to take a cable car to the top of a nearby mountain that offers an incredible view of the surrounding area. We stay the night in either Miyajima or in Hiroshima.

2nd Stop - Hiroshima
The next stop is Hiroshima. There students visit the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb dome. This park, which has recently been added to the World Heritage List, gives students a chance to see the devastating damage of the bomb, graphically displayed in the park's museum. The park also has many sites that promote world peace. This is an important part of the trip that gives students a first-hand understanding of the effects of the atomic bomb. After visiting the Peace Memorial Park students have time to further explore the park and the adjacent museum or to view other sites in Hiroshima.

3rd Stop - Kyoto
We then take the Shinkansen to Kyoto.
In Kyoto students have the chance to visit some of Japan's most beautiful culturally important sites.
Kinkakuji, the golden temple, and Ryoanji, a famous Zen Japanese garden, are two such sites that are part of the JSP tour. Beyond these famous sites, however, Kyoto has much to explore in its winding streets, sidewalk shopping, and extensive parks. Students have free time to explore Kyoto's richness on their own, or to visit one of the surrounding areas, Nara or Osaka. We return to Tokyo on the Shinkansen, where the tour ends at Tokyo station.
