The heart of student life in Japan centers around club activities. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in one or more of the numerous student clubs offered at TIU in order to connect with TIU students and become part of the community. JSP participants can quickly make many new friends, participate in university activities, learn a new skill, get some exercise, and of course improve their Japanese ability just by joining a club.

The first couple of weeks were awesome, everything was new and I was excited to be a part of it. After school started to become routine, culture shock set in. This was a difficult stage where one day I loved Japan and the next I wanted to go home. Then I joined a club! This has probably been one of the best experiences I had! I learned a lot about Japanese people and the culture through the club members that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise." ―Timelle Barrans Willamette University
