Final Agendas |
1st Day (20th March, 2006) |

Bruce Bargmeyer, Chair, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 32 - Data Management and Interchange, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA |
Welcome to OF2006. This presentation covers the purpose and provides an overview of this Open Forum. It introduces the potential of Metadata Registries to register and manage data as well as the underlying semantics, which may be specified in terminologies, concept systems, ontologies, etc. This forms a basis for data/semantics lifecycle management and for semantics services. The intention of this Open Forum is to help align and harmonize metadata registry standards, terminology standards, and related registry/repository/metadata standards. |

Terminology Standardization and Coordination with Related Standards |
10:00--10:45 |
Christian Galinski, Secretary ISO TC 37-Terminology and Language and Content Resources, Termnet, Austria
Austria |
Methodology standardization in/for terminology and other kinds of structured content Christian Galinski, Secretary of ISO TC 37 “Terminology and other language and content resources” (Infoterm, Austria) ISO/TC 37 standards are fundamental for achieving semantic interoperability of structured content in the semantic web. This presentation highlights potential areas of coordination between standards development of TC 37 standards and the ISO/IEC 11179 family of standards as well as other standardization efforts - especially with respect to the emerging networks of federated repositories.

Introduction to Framework for Metamodel Interoperability |
Hajime Horiuchi, Tokyo International University, Japan |
E-business and E-commerce have proliferated over the world, facilitating specific standards such as ebXML or RosettaNet. E-business, by its nature, is not limited to a single industrial domain or territory. Different domains are linked by the internet, and inevitably users or consumers need to access different private individual registries. The metamodel framework family of standards facilitates business collaborations through E-business or E-commerce by providing mechanisms for describing metamodels in each registry in order that they may be shared among different business domains. Particularly, the core model of the metamodel framework provides a mechanism for describing each different metamodel in local registries and enables their registration in the registry. Also, the metamodel framework for model mapping provides a facility for registering mapping rules to enable federation among different registries. This presentation gives an overview of the Framework for Metamodel Interoperability. |

Dublin Core Registries |
Shigeo Sugimoto, Tsukuba University, Japan |
Dublin Core registries have developed in parallel with ISO/IEC 11179 registries. There are many areas where continuing collaboration with the Dublin Core community is useful. This presentation describes Dublin Core registries and metadata initiatives. |

Terminology Exchange (TBX) |
TermBase eXchange (TBX) is an open XML-based standard format for terminological data. This standard provides a number of benefits so long as TBX files can be imported into and exported from most software packages that include a terminological database. This capability will greatly facilitate the flow of terminological information throughout the information cycle both inside an organization and with outside service providers. In addition, terminology that is made available to the general public will become much more accessible to humans and more easily integrated into existing terminological resources. People who care about terminological consistency and who maintain one or more terminology databases (termbases), should be interested in TBX. This can help to avoid locking a termbase into proprietary terminology management software. This presentation was developed in cooperation with Alan K. Melby, Brigham Young University, USA. |

Introduction to Terminology Standardization (TC37) |
The TC 37 tutorial will present the basic principles of terminology management, outlining the essential criteria upon which ISO 704 - Terminology work - Principles and Methods is based, with an emphasis on terminology from ISO 1087 - Terminology Work — Vocabulary — Part 1: Theory and application and Part 2: Computer applications. Special emphasis will be placed on the requirements for managing terminologies, concept systems, knowledge organization systems including the specifications included in in ISO 16642 (Computer applications in terminology - Terminological markup Framework) and ISO 12620 (Computer applications in terminology — Data categories). Issues relating to the use of metadata registries will be highlighted for discussion during the Open Forum and in follow-up meetings. |

Healthcare Metadata & Semantics |
11:00 -- 12:00 |
Harold Solbrig, Mayo Clinic, USA |
This presentation describes semantics management efforts in the healthcare environment. It describes efforts to draw together concept systems from a variety of sources for inclusion into LexGrid. This content has been exported into the XMDR prototype. (See presentation about XMDR.) The presentation considers the possible role of metadata registries for data and semantics management for healthcare. |
