TIU Global Dialogue #20: China's New World Order - Changes in the Non-Intervention Policy

This event has ended

Speaker:
Hak Yin Li
Associate Professor of International Relations
Tokyo International University
For more details on Professor Li's book "China's New World Order - Changes in the Non-Intervention Policy," click HERE.

Moderator:
Christopher Lamont
Associate Professor of International Relations
Assistant Dean of E-Track
Tokyo International University

Description:
China's foreign policies show a discrepancy between principle and practice. Instead of a rhetorical insistence on the country's traditional principle of non-interference, China has developed a soft-intervention policy towards North Korea, Myanmar and the two Sudans. By examining China's diplomatic statements and behavior though empirical discussions of key Chinese mediations, interviews with Chinese scholars and analysis of official documents from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this research conceptualizes China's soft-intervention policy as related to economic manipulation and diplomatic persuasion under Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping. This discrepancy in China's non-intervention policy indicates how Chinese ambitions to shape a new world order are characterized by normative principles, in particular, differentiating China's rise from American hegemony while demonstrating Beijing's willingness to compromise to secure other emerging national interests. Moreover, this study suggests that China is neither a status-quo nor a revisionist power. Rather, it is a self-restrained power.

TIU Global Dialogue 18: Roundtable on the Russian Invasion of Ukraine - Causes, Prospects, and Implications

This event has ended

Panelists:
James Brown, Temple University Japan
Kyoko Hatakeyama, University of Niigata Prefecture
Chris Lamont, Tokyo International University
Or Honig, Tokyo International University
Medlir Mema, Tokyo International University

Moderator:
Akitoshi Miyashita, Tokyo International University

Description:
The Russian invasion of Ukraine shook the world. The war has forced more than 4 million Ukrainians to leave their home country and has resulted in the killing of many civilians, including women and children. Not only does the invasion constitute a serious violation of international law but it also poses a major challenge to the post-Cold War international order. How can we make sense of this war? What led Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine? Are the U.S. and its NATO allies justified in ruling out any military involvement in the conflict? When is the war likely to end and how? What are the implications of the invasion to various regions of the world, such as Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia? In this roundtable, we invite prominent IR scholars to discuss various aspects of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

TIU Global Dialogue 16: Overcoming Isolationism: Japan's Leadership in Promoting Regional Security Multilateralism

This event has ended

Speaker:
Dr. Paul Midford
Professor of International Studies
Department of Transcultural and Global Studies
Meiji Gakuin University

Description:
This presentation asks why, in the wake of the Cold War, Japan suddenly reversed years of steadfast opposition to security cooperation with its neighbors. Long isolated and opposed to multilateral agreements, Japan proposed East Asia's first multilateral security forum in the early 1990s, emerging as a regional leader. It explores what led to this surprising about-face and offers a corrective to the misperception that Japan's security strategy is reactive to US pressure and unresponsive to its neighbors. Drawing on newly released official documents and extensive interviews this presentation provides and overview of a quarter century of Japanese leadership in promoting regional security cooperation. It demonstrates that Japan has a much more nuanced relationship with its neighbors and has played a more significant leadership role in shaping East Asian security than has previously been recognized.
