JSP Japanese courses are especially designed for students who want to know about Japan and its people through learning their language. The main purpose of the program is to acquire communicative competence in Japanese as an adult, which requires not only accurate, but also culturally appropriate usage of the language. Therefore, although the focus is on speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing, Japanese culture is an integrated part of every class. Without an understanding of Japanese culture, students can never communicate effectively in Japanese.
For this reason, learning aspects of Japanese culture outside of the classroom is also an essential part of the course work. Students are recommended to mix with other TIU students and exchange ideas to understand each other. Joining a club on campus and participating in extra curricular activities are also good ways to meet Japanese students. By joining a club the student can not only meet friends and learn Japanese, but will also be exposed to the dynamics of the group in Japan, an important cultural lesson.
The classes listed below are the general outlines of the levels offered.
The final classes will depend mainly on the results of a placement test taken by all students on the first day of class. Five classes will be offered and the levels will be adjusted to suit student needs as seen by the Japanese Language Instructors. In the event of a low number of JSP participants, the number of class levels for the Japanese language may be reduced from five to four, with the result that some applicants may not be accepted.
