Tokyo International University (TIU) was privileged to host Mr. Ryo Sarashina, an expert from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Africa Department, as part of its “Career Experience Practicum” course organized by Prof. Y. Toride. JICA is an agency under the Japanese government that provides developmental aid and assistance to developing countries in a variety of forms including but not limited to grants, loans, cooperation on special projects, and volunteering.
Mr. Sarashina’s lecture provided students with a comprehensive overview of JICA’s approach to cooperation in Africa and highlighted the continent’s pivotal role in global development. He focused on key issues in Africa and explored how the private sector can contribute to their resolution. He also outlined JICA’s vision of “Leading the World with Trust” and introduced its strategies and priorities, including human capital development and the promotion of private sector investment.
Following the lecture, students engaged in group work and a dynamic debate session designed to deepen their understanding and critical thinking on the topics presented.
The six student groups diligently researched their assigned topics, utilizing open sources like ChatGPT, Google, and academic reports. After each debate, a majority vote was held to determine the most compelling team, encouraging students to actively listen and evaluate the arguments of their peers.
This special session provided valuable insights into the complexities of international development and Japan’s role in Africa. It also empowered students to apply their knowledge in a collaborative and competitive setting. The hands-on nature of the debate and group presentations allowed students to gain a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted challenges and opportunities in African development. This session is one of many examples of the university’s commitment to offering enriching educational experiences that bridge theory with real-world application.
Tokyo International University places a strong emphasis on collaborating with world-leading organizations through various programs, including the “Career Experience Practicum,” to support student career development. By participating in such programs, TIU students acquire the necessary skills and abilities to become global professionals who can contribute to society.
