Curriculum Overview and Credits

Credit System graphic
Simplified credit system flow.

Students are required to accumulate 124 credits in order to graduate. Credits are earned by completing courses.

Students must complete the minimum required credits in each category:

  • Major Courses: 52 credits
  • General Education (Japanese, Liberal Arts, Academic Literacy): 32 credits

This totals 84 credits.

Therefore, students must earn an additional 40 credits to reach the 124 credits required for graduation. These are earned through Elective Courses, where students may choose available courses or programs from Major Courses, Liberal Arts, Japanese and other special programs to reach the threshold for graduation.

Major Courses

All students must earn at least 52 credits in their major field of study (Business Economics, Digital Business & Innovation, Data Science & AI or International Relations). Major courses begin in the second year. After attaining 52 credits, students may continue to take major courses to earn additional elective course credits.

Liberal Arts

In order to obtain a solid foundation in core academic principles, students must complete Liberal Arts courses in their first and second years. These courses range from introductions to academic fields to general skills such as statistics. Students must earn at least 16 credits from Liberal Arts courses. Additional courses may then be selected to earn elective course credits.

Japanese

Students with little or no Japanese will complete two elementary Japanese courses during their first semester (8 credits awarded). Students with existing Japanese ability may skip these classes based on their entry test result. Further Japanese classes are optional, and award further credits.

*Students who skip the elementary Japanese courses will be required to gain an additional 4 or 8 elective credits

Academic Literacy

The two Academic Literacy courses, Analytical Reading and Composition I and Analytical Reading and Composition II, are required courses for all students. These courses equip students with the knowledge necessary to thrive in English-based academic environments, including topics such as essay writing and text decoding. These courses will be completed over the first year and award 8 credits in total.

Special Program Courses

TIU offers a number of special programs, such as internships, the Career Experience Practicum, and study abroad opportunities. Completion of these courses grant elective course credits.
